Checkpost

How to hide Cash on Delivery for large orders on Shopify

Short answer: Hide the Cash on Delivery payment method when the cart subtotal is over 500, so big orders are paid upfront. In Checkpost, choose “Hide cash on delivery over $500” from Templates, adjust the values, test it, then save and enable the rule.

The problem

Cash on delivery is popular in many markets, but a refused COD parcel costs two shipping legs and ties up stock. The bigger the order, the bigger the loss when the buyer isn't home or changes their mind at the door.

How to set it up

  1. Install Checkpost from the Shopify App Store.
  2. Open Templates and choose Hide cash on delivery over $500.
  3. Set the amount, and match the method name to the one your checkout shows (e.g. "Cash on Delivery (COD)").
  4. Use Try this rule to test a sample cart, then click Save rule.

The rule

Hide payment methods containing "Cash on Delivery" when all of these conditions is true:

Shoppers see no message: the methods are changed before checkout shows them.

Where this rule works

This changes matching payment methods that Shopify exposes to the customization. Payment rules do not have the same express-checkout coverage as cart validation. Shopify limits wallet customization and credit-card customization on non-Plus US/Canada stores. See Shopify's payment compatibility and verify your COD/manual method in a development store. Geographic payment rules currently use the first delivery group's address.

Tips

Can you do this without an app?

Shopify can't hide a manual payment method based on the cart. Without an app, COD is shown for every order or for none.

FAQ

Do shoppers see a message when COD is hidden?

No. Payment and delivery rules only change the list of methods; the shopper simply doesn't see Cash on Delivery.

Can I hide other payment methods the same way?

Yes. Add any method name, such as Bank Deposit or Klarna, to the rule.
