How to set a maximum order value on Shopify
Short answer: Stop unusually large orders from completing automatically — a simple guard against fraud and stock-outs. In Checkpost, choose “Maximum order value” from Templates, adjust the values, test it, then save and enable the rule.
The problem
Unusually large orders are often fraudulent, or larger than you can fulfil from stock. A ceiling lets your team review them before payment is taken.
How to set it up
- Install Checkpost from the Shopify App Store.
- Open Templates and choose Maximum order value.
- Set the maximum subtotal in store currency.
- Use Try this rule to test a sample cart, then click Save rule.
The rule
Checkout is blocked when all of these conditions is true:
- Cart subtotal is greater than 2000
Shoppers see: “Orders over $2,000 need to be placed with our team. Please contact us.” at the top of checkout, in the cart and at checkout.

}Where this rule works
These are cart and checkout validations, including supported accelerated checkouts. They are current-cart policies; they do not track previous purchases of a SKU. Shopify excludes POS, recurring subscription orders and native pre-order/Try Before You Buy flows from this API. See Shopify's validation compatibility.
Tips
- Combine with "Customer is logged in = No" to only restrict guest checkouts.
- Invite large buyers to contact you or request a quote in the message.
