How to require a minimum spend on a Shopify collection

Short answer: Require a minimum subtotal for items from a specific collection or tag — e.g. frozen goods that need insulated packaging. In Checkpost, choose “Minimum spend on a collection” from Templates, adjust the values, test it, then save and enable the rule.

The problem

Some product groups have their own shipping cost floor, such as frozen food in insulated boxes or fragile glass with special packing. A minimum for just that group keeps the rest of the store unrestricted.

How to set it up

1. Install Checkpost from the Shopify App Store.
2. Open Templates and choose Minimum spend on a collection.
3. Choose the collection or tag and the minimum spend.
4. Use Try this rule to test a sample cart, then click Save rule.

The rule

Checkout is blocked when all of these conditions is true:

• Combined subtotal of products (products tagged frozen) is less than 50

Shoppers see: “Frozen items need a minimum of $50 to ship in insulated packaging.” at the top of checkout, in the cart and at checkout.

Where this rule works

These are cart and checkout validations, including supported accelerated checkouts. They are current-cart policies; they do not track previous purchases of a SKU. Shopify excludes POS, recurring subscription orders and native pre-order/Try Before You Buy flows from this API. See Shopify's validation compatibility.

Tips

• Select a collection or use a product tag to define the group.
• Carts without products from the group are never blocked.

Yes, and it's converted automatically when shoppers pay in another currency.

Can I require a minimum quantity instead of value?

Yes. Choose "Combined quantity of products" instead of subtotal.
